Some languages are universal: soccer, mathematics, art and nature, to name a few. From the latter originates the Italic Shinto- ism that inspires Anna Gili’s path through life. This is why her love at first sight with Japan was immediate and reciprocal.

This collection of blown-glass vases, too, is the fruit of inspiration born in the woods. With her lying on the ground, the trees became vases, the branches became noses, wood became glass. Together they became faces, the faces became masks. African masks, the masks of the Commedia dell’Arte. The faces of the black continent are made less dramatic by means of Venetian humor.

This gives us a dottor Balanzone from the Ivory Coast and a Pantalone from Cameroon. There are Arlecchino and Brighella, too, who from Bergamo wound up in Nigeria and Gabon. If alchemy is about the finding of gold, then Italy’s gold is its ancient skills in artisanship that have remained unaltered since the Middle Ages. Anna Gili has found this gold in the master glass blowers of the Compagnia Vetraria Muranese.
